ICYMI: Diving gold, gymnastics woes Monday in Rio
— -- RIO DE JANEIRO -- Before we finish another evening with a few swimming duels, here is what you might have missed from earlier on Monday in Rio:
More medals for Boudia: David Boudia and Steele Johnson won the silver medal in men's 10-meter synchronized platform diving final Monday with a score of 457.11, 39.87 points behind China's Aisen Chen and Yue Lin. Thomas Daley and Daniel Goodfellow of Great Britain won bronze (444.45). Boudia is the seventh American man with three career Olympic diving medals and the first since Greg Louganis won five from 1976-88. Read more
U.S. men's team falls again: After finishing second overall in Day 1 of qualifying before Monday's final, the Americans struggled early and could not recover. It led to a second-straight fifth-place finish for the Americans, behind winners Japan, and then Russia (silver) and China (bronze). The U.S. tried to rally for a podium spot late, but Danell Leyva's fall during his high bar routine partially sealed the Americans' fate. Read more
Serena bounces back: While Serena and Venus' doubles run came to an early end, the former continued her singles run Monday with a 7-6, 6-2 win versus France's Alize Cornet. Madison Keys also advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 victory over Kristina Mladenovic.
And the gold-medal winner is ...: Rugby returned to the Olympics for the first time since 1924, but we got our first-ever women's champion Monday. Australia, heavily favored to win the gold medal, beat New Zealand 24-17 to lock up the Olympic title. The U.S. Women beat France 19-5 to finish fifth overall in the inaugural women's tournament. Both U.S. teams so far undefeated: The U.S. men's and women's basketball teams both won their second games of the tournament. Five players scored in double figures to lead the women to a 103-63 victory over Spain, while Paul George led all scorers with 20 points as the men cruised to a 113-69 win against Venezuela. Early exits: Sabre fencers Mariel Zagunis and Ibtihaj Muhammad did not advance out of the Round of 16, losing to Russia's Ekaterina Dyachenko (15-12) and Cecilia Berder (15-12), respectively. But their Olympics are not over yet, as both are set to compete in the team event. Said Muhammad after the match: "This has been a beautiful experience for me. This was written for me and the chips fell where they did and I feel proud to represent Team USA even in defeat." Read more
Men's team struggles: The U.S. men's water polo team slipped to 0-2 after losing 10-9 against Spain, which scored four unanswered goals to rebound from a 7-6 deficit. The Americans, who lost their opener versus Croatia, are tied for fifth in Group B with three matches left.
U.S. women still undefeated: The U.S. women's team pulled off its second straight upset to open the tournament, beating world No. 1 Australia 2-1 on Monday after edging rival Argentina in the opener.
