ICYMI: Serena exits, while Ebner makes Olympic debut
— -- RIO DE JANEIRO -- There were a few ups and downs Tuesday at the Rio Olympics -- golds for Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky and the U.S. women's gymnastics team, and a surprising draw for the U.S. women's soccer squad. But here's is a recap of some of the other events you might have missed:
Another star loses in Rio: Serena Williams joined her sister Venus and Novak Djokovic as the latest tennis star to be ousted from the Olympic singles play. The world No. 1 lost 6-4 6-3 against Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in the third round. The Williams sisters (doubles) and Djokovic (singles) didn't make it past the first round. Madison Keys beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 3-6 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals, where she will face Russia's Daria Kasatkina. The American doubles duo of Jack Sock and Steve Johnson advanced to the semis. Read more
The NFL comes to Rio: Members of the New England Patriots were cheering on teammate Nate Ebner, who took a break from being a defensive back to chase his Olympic dream in rugby, which returned to the Olympic program for the first time since 1924. After losing to Argentina 17-14 in their first match of the day, the Americans shut out host Brazil 26-0. Ebner scored once in the second match. The U.S. closes out group play against Fiji on Wednesday. Read more
A first for Team USA: Travis Stevens won the silver medal in the men's judo 81kg division after losing to Russia's Khasan Khalmurzaev by ippon with 2:42 remaining in the match. Still, it is the first medal of any kind for the United States in the class, and adds to the overall total of Olympic medals won by the Americans in men's judo (10 - four silvers, six bronzes). So far, so good: Brady Ellison reached the round of 16 in the individual archery competition but had to go through teammate Jake Kaminski to get there. The teammates were in the same bracket and won their opening matches, but Eliison edged out Kaminski with a 6-2 victory. Ellison might have to go through another teammate to reach the quarters, as Zach Garrett could join him in the round of 16.
Opening win: The U.S. women's water polo team beat Spain 11-4 to start the tournament. Kiley Neushult, team captain Maggie Stephens and Courtney Mathewson each had two goals. Preliminary play continues Thursday, as the Americans face China in Group B (noon ET start)
Another medal for veteran Dutton: Riding the horse Mighty Nice, six-time Olympian Philip Dutton took home the bronze medal in the individual three-day eventing competition. He finished with a score of 51.80. It is the third Olympic medal for Dutton, who won team gold for his native Australia in 1996 and 2000.
