— -- New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather is expected to step aside as general manager and announce assistant general manager Jeff Gorton as his replacement, a source confirmed to ESPN.com on Wednesday.

Sather is expected to retain a position in the organization -- likely that of team president -- but will cease in the running of day-to-day operations.

Sather will hand over the reins to Gorton, who has been a coveted candidate for vacant management positions in the NHL in recent years. The Rangers have denied multiple teams' requests to interview Gorton for vacancies the past two summers, wanting to keep him within the organization to eventually succeed Sather.

Sather has held posts as the Rangers president and GM since 2000.
