Jeter, Giambi return against Boston

— -- BOSTON -- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and first baseman Jason Giambi each returned to the lineup for the New York Yankees' 8-7 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night after missing the previous two games. Jeter went 0-for-5 and Giambi was 0-for-3, extending his hitless streak to 21 at-bats and dropping his average to .221. Jeter has a broken bone in his right hand and hadn't played since he was hit by a pitch from Tampa Bay's Victor Zambrano on Tuesday. He took batting practice before the opener of the three-game series at Fenway Park, with manager Joe Torre and general manager Brian Cashman watching from behind the cage. After taking his swings, Jeter approached Torre and said, "I'm good." After a brief chat, Torre informed reporters that Jeter would play. "I think he's fine. He's playing," Torre said. "He had to show me 80 percent to change my mind. It's a combination of looking me in the eye and the result of the BP." Torre said Thursday that Jeter would probably miss the first game, and he was not in the original lineup. Jeter, whose average dropped to .277, is wearing special padding in both gloves to protect his hand. "Just watching him, it was much different than I saw yesterday," Torre said. "If I didn't turn him loose today, I was going to turn him loose tomorrow. Granted, it was only BP. It's a far cry from Curt Schilling out there." Schilling started for Boston and allowed seven runs in 5 1-3 innings. Giambi, recovering from an intestinal parasite, spent much of Thursday undergoing tests to find out why he has been feeling so weak. The 2000 AL MVP did not start in eight straight games from June 26 to July 4 because of the ailment. "We're hoping that everything's negative, and it's taking this long for me to get rid of everything I have," Giambi said. "I feel OK. I'm thinking everything is OK."
