— -- San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard will not make his season debut against the Phoenix Suns on Saturday as originally hoped, sources told ESPN's Michael C. Wright and Adrian Wojnarowski on Friday.

A decision hasn't been finalized for Leonard's return, but the Spurs are now targeting Tuesday's road game against the Dallas Mavericks, the sources said.

Leonard has been had right quadriceps tendinopathy that has kept him out of all 25 of San Antonio's games. On Monday, when addressing his possible return, Leonard said "soon to come."

A two-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Leonard averaged career highs in points (25.5) and assists (3.5) last season, while also averaging 1.8 steals. Leonard hasn't suited up to play for San Antonio since Game 1 of the Western Conference finals, a series he couldn't continue due to a sprained ankle.

As part of the recovery from quadriceps tendinopathy, Leonard has worked through a rehabilitation process comprised of several steps such as individual work, 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 drills, before receiving clearance to practice with the team. Leonard had been working out with Tony Parker, as he recovered from a ruptured quadriceps tendon, as well as former Spurs players Matt Bonner and Tim Duncan.
