Marvin Lewis signs 1-year extension

— -- CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Bengals signed coach Marvin Lewis to a one-year contract extension Friday.

His previous contract, renewed after the 2010 season, was set to expire after 2014.

"Marvin has earned this commitment for the job he is doing," Bengals president and owner Mike Brown said. "We are one of only five teams to qualify for the playoffs the last three years, and our prospects are bright looking ahead.

"Marvin is driven to achieve more," Brown added, "and we are happy to secure his leadership of our team beyond the coming season."

Cincinnati went 11-5 in 2013, winning a third AFC North title and reaching the playoffs for a third straight season for the first time. As they have for all five of Lewis' playoff appearances, though, the Bengals lost, 27-10 in the wild-card round to the visiting San Diego Chargers.

With the extension, Lewis enters 2014 coaching his franchise-record 12th season. He is 90-90-1, including the playoffs, and his 90 wins are a club record.

Lewis confirmed to reporters at the NFL combine in Indianapolis three weeks ago that he and Brown were discussing a new deal. The extension comes amid concerns the team isn't making many moves in free agency.

Four days into the free-agency period, the Bengals have re-signed only three players while releasing two others and losing another three to other teams. A fourth, wide receiver Andrew Hawkins, is likely to leave because the Bengals are not expected to match his offer sheet with the Cleveland Browns.
