— -- NEW YORK -- Center fielder  Carlos Gomez is returning to the New York Mets in a trade that sends right-hander Zack Wheeler and infielder Wilmer Flores to the Milwaukee Brewers, sources told ESPN on Wednesday night.

Gomez, 29, is signed through next season. He will earn $9 million in 2016.

A source said the deal is pending a Brewers physical of Wheeler, who only resumed throwing Monday. Wheeler is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and has estimated he will return to the majors in June or July 2016.

Gomez, a two-time All-Star, is batting .262 with eight homers and 43 RBIs in 286 at-bats. Gomez began his career with the Mets before getting traded to the Minnesota Twins in the Johan Santana deal on Feb. 2, 2008.

Flores began the season as the Mets' shortstop, but more recently he has played primarily at second base. He entered Wednesday's game batting .249 with 10 homers and 40 RBIs in 338 at-bats.

The Mets continued to use Flores in Wednesday's game against the San Diego Padres, even after the impending trade news became public. Fans at Citi Field gave Flores an ovation before and after his seventh-inning at-bat. He was dabbing tears from his eyes as he headed to the field the following half-inning.

Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado took to Twitter to laud his departing teammate.

The trade is the third by Mets general manager Sandy Alderson since Friday.

The Mets also acquired Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe from the Atlanta Braves for minor league right-handers John Gant and Rob Whalen and reliever Tyler Clippard from the Oakland Athletics for minor league right-hander Casey Meisner.

Information from ESPN's Jim Bowden and Jerry Crasnick was used in this report.
