Miguel Cabrera cleared to hit, throw
— -- The Detroit Tigers are optimistic that Miguel Cabrera will be ready for Opening Day after the injured slugger was cleared for "non-impact exercises."
The Tigers updated Cabrera's status Wednesday, saying that the first baseman can begin hitting, throwing and running.
"While there is no definitive timetable, it's optimistic Miguel could be ready close to Opening Day," the Tigers said in a statement.
Cabrera was examined Tuesday by foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, who performed foot and ankle surgery on the two-time MVP earlier this offseason.
The Tigers said that Anderson's examination revealed "a good progression of healing."
Cabrera, who will turn 32 in April, batted .313 with 25 home runs -- his lowest total since his rookie year in 2003 -- and 109 RBIs last season. A stress fracture in his right foot hampered his production toward the end of the season.
