— -- The ATP on Monday has further fined Nick Kyrgios and issued a suspended 28-day ban for the Australian player's " insulting remark" to Stan Wawrinka during the Rogers Cup on Aug. 13.

A courtside microphone during ESPN's telecast of the event had picked up Kyrgios saying that Australian player Thanasi Kokkinakis had slept with Donna Vekic, who is reportedly Wawrinka's girlfriend.

Kyrgios had already been fined $10,000 -- the maximum allowed by the ATP rulebook for incidents of verbal abuse or unsportsmanlike conduct. However, on Monday, he was fined an additional $25,000 for "aggravated behavior" after a review of the incident.

In addition, Kyrgios will be suspended 28 days from any ATP sanctioned event if, over the next six months, he incurs any fines for verbal or physical abuse at any ATP tournament, or he reaches $5,000 in fines of any type.

"This incident was egregious and reflected poorly on our sport," ATP executive vice president Gayle David Bradshaw said in a statement. "Nick has expressed regret, and the best result would be that he learns a lesson from this incident and that he understands he is responsible to the Tour and to fellow players for both his actions and his words. It is with these factors in mind I feel he should have the opportunity to 'earn' his way out of additional sanctions."

Kyrgios had already issued apologies to Wawrinka, as well as Vekic and Kokkinakis and their families for "dragging them into something that wasn't deserved for them."

The fifth-ranked Wawrinka announced in April that he had separated from his wife, with whom he has a daughter. The 30-year-old Swiss player has since been linked with the 19-year-old Vekic.

Vekic played mixed doubles with Kokkinakis, also 19 and ranked No. 76, at the 2014 Australian Open as a wild-card entry.
