(AP) -- Peter Thomas drew a charge with 6.3 seconds left and Jermaine Bucknor hit two free throws with 5.3 seconds remaining as Richmond held off Hampton 44-40 Friday in the season opener for each. Both teams struggled in the first half, with the Spiders taking a 19-15 halftime lead. The Pirates came back to take a 25-23 lead with 13:59 remaining. A 3-pointer by Bucknor ignited a 16-3 Richmond run over seven minutes, giving the Spiders a 39-28 with 6:59 remaining. Bucknor had three 3-pointers and Thomas scored five during the run. Hampton responded with a 12-2 run, closing the deficit to 41-40 with 1:19 remaining. Jarhon Giddings hit one of two free throws with 14.5 seconds left. On their next possession, Rashad West charged into Thomas under the basket. Following Bucknor's two free throws, Jeff Granger missed a jumper at the buzzer. Bucknor led the Spiders with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Bruce Brown led Hampton with 14 points, and Granger added 12.
