— -- DORAL, Fla. -- Rory McIlroy is generally lauded for his golf-swing technique, but he's now opened the door to scrutiny on his ability to toss a club in anger.

After his approach shot on the par-5 eighth hole found the water Friday, the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world hurled his long iron into the offending pond at Trump National Doral's Blue course.

A quick synopsis: The hip rotation was excellent, followed by a full helicopter effect on the flight of the iron, which splashed into the water, leaving McIlroy with just 13 clubs in his bag.

McIlroy, who is off to a shaky start in 2015 on the PGA Tour, had hit a 302-yard drive on the hole in the second round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship. He then had 226 yards left to the pin at the same hole he eagled Thursday, but he hooked the shot into the water.

After taking a drop, he hit the next one on the green and two-putted for bogey.

McIlroy, who won on Feb. 1 in Dubai for his fourth victory in 12 starts, missed the cut in his 2015 PGA Tour debut last week at the Honda Classic. He opened here with a 1-over 73 but rebounded with a 70 on Friday despite the club-tossing bogey.

Although the PGA Tour never announces discipline, McIlroy will undoubtedly be fined for his misadventure. McIlroy is unable to replace the club during the round.
