— -- PHILADELPHIA -- Ryne Sandberg has resigned as Philadelphia Phillies manager, leaving the team as it struggles with the worst record in baseball.

Sandberg announced his decision in a news conference Friday afternoon.

"I do not like to lose. I hate to lose," Sandberg said. "I think that's the biggest thing that weighed on me."

Pete Mackanin has accepted the role as interim manager, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. Mackanin will helm the team for at least its weekend series against the Washington Nationals, the team said.

Sandberg, 55, had been in the position since being named the interim manager late in the 2013 season. The interim tag was removed the following offseason.

The Phillies finished last in the National League East in 2014 with a record of 73-89. They are also in last place this season at 26-48, trailing the Nationals by 14½ games.

Sandberg, a Hall of Fame second baseman with the Chicago Cubs, leaves his first managerial job with a record of 119-159.
