— -- ST. LOUIS -- Outfielder Shane Victorino underwent surgery on two disks in his back Tuesday in Los Angeles but the timetable for his recovery is still unknown, Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

"From what I understand, there were two disks that required the procedure, and that's the extent of the information I have," Farrell said. "We haven't received any prognosis on the next steps involved, how much rehab is going to go on or the overall time frame for his recovery."

Farrell said he did not know how long Victorino had been dealing with the back issues or whether it was the root of his other injury problems this season.

"Low back and hamstrings are always going to be inter-related," Farrell said.

Victorino has been limited to only 133 plate appearances this season over 30 games, hitting .268 with two homers and 12 RBIs. His contract with the Red Sox runs through next season.
