— -- The Boston Red Sox bolstered their starting rotation Thursday by acquiring left-hander Drew Pomeranz from the San Diego Padres, sources told ESPN's Jim Bowden.

The deal was first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The Padres will get minor leaguer Anderson Espinoza, one of Boston's top pitching prospects, in the trade, sources told Bowden. Espinoza, an 18-year-old who is currently pitching in Class A, is ranked No. 14 in ESPN Insider Keith Law's midseason  top 50 prospects list.

Pomeranz, 27, will try to help a Boston starting rotation that posted a 4.72 ERA in the first half, which ranks 19th in the majors. A first-time All-Star this season, he is 8-7 with a 2.47 ERA in 17 starts, with 115 strikeouts in 102 innings pitched. He ranks second in the majors in both opponents' batting average (.184) and opponents' OPS (.555).

The Red Sox, who sit just two games behind the American League East-leading Baltimore Orioles, will be Pomeranz's fourth major league team.

The Padres went into the All-Star break at 38-51, 18½ games out of first place in the National League West.
