PALESTINE, Texas— -- Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was greeted by dozens of fans as he returned to his Texas hometown for the 9th annual "Adrian Peterson Day" after a season in which he did not play.

Peterson acknowledged every guest at the event Saturday in Palestine, Texas -- signing autographs and taking pictures for over three hours.

"The people here, they understand where I come from," he said. "They know what kind of heart I have because they've been around me my entire life. These are people that actually know me -- it feels good to be supported."

Last September, Peterson was indicted on a charge of reckless or negligent injury to a child after he allegedly spanked his 4-year-old son with a switch. The running back was reinstated by the NFL in April and made his return to the Vikings earlier this month.

While Peterson did not discuss the case, the community showed its support with kind words and banners that read, "Welcome home. We got your back!" He was also surrounded by his family the entire afternoon, including his wife Ashley, their 3-year-old son Adrian Jr., and his parents.

"[I've] definitely been getting some more encouraging words," said Peterson.
