— -- SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Tiger Woods had the worst nine-hole score of his career Friday and is on his way to missing the cut for the second consecutive event at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

He had a double bogey and a triple bogey on consecutive holes as he played the back nine at TPC Scottsdale in 44 strokes and was 10 over par for the tournament.

It would be just the 13th time worldwide in his career that he has failed to qualify for the final 36 holes.

Woods missed the cut at the 2014 PGA Championship, and this is just his second tournament since he ended his injury-plagued season. The Hero World Challenge in December was an unofficial PGA Tour event with no cut, and Woods tied for last in that field.

He was 2 over par as he began Friday's second round at TPC Scottsdale in cool, damp, rainy conditions.

Woods was also threatening some other negative territory: the 80s. He has broken 80 in his career all but once -- at the 2002 Open Championship, where he had a windblown 81 in the third round.

While expectations were not high for Woods in his first event of 2015, his performance still rates as a surprise.

The chipping woes that were apparent in December were in play Thursday. On Friday, a couple of errant drives led to his problems. When he did give himself birdie chances early in the round, he failed to convert.

Woods holds the record with 142 consecutive cuts made on the PGA Tour, which he accomplished from 1998 through 2005. It remains one of the more underrated feats in his 79-victory, 14-major career.

His missed cut at the PGA in August was just his fourth in a major. He also missed the cut last year at the Quicken Loans National -- his first tournament following back surgery.

"Physically I'm fine,'' Woods said after the first round Thursday. "I feel great. Mentally I'm a little bit tired from the grind of trying to piece together a round.''

Woods is scheduled to play next week's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where he has won eight times in his career. He shot a third-round 79 last year and missed the secondary, 54-hole cut.
