— -- SAN FRANCISCO -- Javier Vazquez turned around the Arizona Diamondbacks' fortunes by rebounding from problems of his own. Vazquez scattered eight hits in seven scoreless innings as the Diamondbacks won for just the second time in their last six games with a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants. The 28-year-old righthander, who won at least 10 games in each of his previous five campaigns, gave up 17 earned runs in his first three starts this season. In this one, Vazquez (1-2) allowed five runners through the first five innings but was helped as the Giants hit into three double plays. "Javier was outstanding and we knew we were going to need to have a game from him like this tonight," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "He really picked us up big time. Things haven't gone great for him this year, but this shows what kind of pitcher Javier Vazquez is." Vazquez, who issued two walks and struck out two, captured his first win in seven starts dating to last season. "I got a few breaks tonight," Vazquez said. "It's not the best I've felt all year, but the results were better today." Despite holding a commanding 11-3 edge in hits, the Giants did not score their first run until the ninth, when Mike Matheny ripped a one-out double against Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ray Durham. Lyon allowed two hits in 1 1/3 innings but notched his sixth save. "We had lots of offense," San Francisco manager Felipe Alou said. "Even by accident, we should have scored." Luis Gonzalez opened the scoring with an RBIs double against San Francisco starter Noah Lowry (1-1) in the third inning and Troy Glaus added a sacrifice fly later in the frame. "Lowry has a great changeup," Gonzalez said. "I made some adjustments before the second time up and I took a two-strike approach from the beginning and got a changeup." Lowry had his streak of consecutive wins to start a career snapped at seven. In losing for the first time in 23 career appearances, Lowry surrendered two runs, two hits and five walks in six innings. After throwing 80 pitches through four frames, the lefthander retired the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings. "The winning streak doesn't mean much to me," Lowry said. "I just wanted to give us some momentum. Tonight, it was a battle from the beginning." The loss was the third straight for the Giants. "We haven't been getting any key hits," San Francisco's Omar Vizquel said. "We haven't made the key pitch to get the key out to get out of the inning."
