May 12, 2010— -- Microsoft has begun rolling out the new version of Office. Office 2010 for businesses arrives today and for the first time there will be a free online version that works on the web. The free online apps will be stripped down with fewer features than the desktop version. The consumer edition of Office 2010 will be available next month.

Verizon Wireless is working with Google to develop a tablet computer to rival the iPad. Apple says it sold 1 million iPads in the first month of its release and Google wants a piece of the action. Verizon already carries several smartphones that run on Google's Android operating system. There is still no word when the new device might be available.

Sony has just released a new gadget called the Dash. The company calls it a "personal Internet viewer," but it may be better described as a digital photo frame on steroids. It is designed for your bedside table, kitchen counter or desk.

The seven-inch touch screen device has more than 1,000 apps that let you do things such as check your Facebook status, follow Twitter and watch videos. The Wall Street Journal's Katie Boehret said she's not really sure where the $200 gadget fits in her life. "I have a laptop and I have a smartphone and I use both of those devices for a lot of things that this tries to do and, frankly, this Dash doesn't do those things nearly as well," she said.

You can read Boehret's full review on the Wall Street Journal's website.

If you've ever wondered what you'd look like as a caveman, now there's an app for that. The Smithsonian has released the MEanderthal app for the iPhone and Android phones. The app transforms your face to look like your closest extinct relatives based on everything known about them. Users should expect a bigger nose, sloping cheekbones and a big brow ridge. The app is based on a popular exhibit at the museum that also turns visitor's faces into cavemen.
