Lisa's Story

— -- She's attractive; she's a doctor; she's a nice Jewish girl living in Manhattan; Lisa shouldn't have any trouble meeting a potential husband, right?

"People think it's really easy to meet someone in New York City," Lisa, 36, says, "but it really isn't." Lisa confesses having a tough time partly because she's busy, partly because she doesn't want to date doctors, and partly because she doesn't post her picture and conceals her name and occupation.

"There are a lot of reasons I don't want to post a picture." Lisa says. "My profession requires a certain amount of being conservative. I wouldn't want someone just to see my picture posted with an ad and wonder, 'what's my doctor doing on the Internet?' " Lisa keeps her name under wraps for security reasons and keeps her medical degree a secret to discourage any gold digging. "With these guys, if they know you're a doctor ... forget it! They'll bring the engagement ring to the first date."

So Lisa creates an alias -- Jennifer the student -- and posts ads with scant information and no photo. Few men are brave enough to meet a woman under these conditions, but Lisa dates a handful of diverse respondents -- including an auctioneer, a Playgirl editor, a long-haired Republican and -- yes -- even a doctor. What will happen when these suitors find out who "Jennifer" really is?

ABC's documentary series "Hooking Up" follows 11 women through a year of online dating. The series debuts Thursday, July 14, at 9 p.m. ET.
