— -- India is more connected than ever.

While total internet user growth is flat worldwide, India surged 40 percent year-over-year and now has 277 million users, according to the annual Internet Trends Report from Mary Meeker, a partner at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

China, the world's most populous country, holds the top spot.

India's rise also knocked the United States into the third slot in terms of the number of connected users, according to Meeker's report. The south Asian country has plenty of potential for gaining more users, since at 277 million connected people, that's 22 percent penetration, according to Meeker's report.

There are now 3 billion global internet users, according to Meeker, putting worldwide penetration at 42 percent.
