The new iPhone 5 will be 4 inches tall, larger than its predecessors, with a retina display.

With a case made entirely of glass and aluminum, the new phone will have a fifth row of icons. Previous iPhones had four.

Apple said the iPhone 5 would have an improved speaker, and Siri, its voice-activated digital assistant, would be enhanced. Prices start at $199 for the base model.

The new phone, Apple said, will have an A6 chip, almost doubling processing speed in many cases.

Apple's retina display, first seen on the iPhone 4, means the iPhone screen will have 44 percent more color saturation, the company said.

Apple is changing the cable that connects the iPhone 5 to other devices, including a charger. It's called Lightning. Apple said it's smaller and more durable than the existing connector. An adapter will be available for owners of existing hardware.

The iPhone 5 will come with an 8mp camera and a fast f/2.4 lens, better for photography with limited light. It will also shoot 1080p video.

A new feature, said Apple executive Phil Schiller (right), is "breakthrough software for panorama photos."

On previous devices, Apple relied on Google maps to give users directions. No longer. Apple now makes its own. Siri's voice tells you where to turn.

Through Apple's iCloud service, which lets one store content online, the company said iPhone 5 users will be able to share photo streams with friends.

Prices are for users with service contracts. The iPhone 5 will be available for pre-order on Sept. 14, and Apple said it will start to ship on Sept. 21.

Apple also announced upgrades to its iPod music players. Apple's Greg Joswiak made the introduction. The new iPod Nano is 5.4 mm thick with a 2.5-inch display.

Apple's Joswiak said the new iPod Touch is seven times faster than the previous model.

The updated iPod Touch will have a 4-inch Retina display and A5 processor.

The new iPod Touch has a 5 megapixel iSight camera with a fast f/2.4 lens for pictures in low light.
