Yellowstone Tourist Attacked by Bison
Y E L L O W S T O N E N A T I O N A L P A R K, Wyo., July 11 -- A 67-year-old man was reported in stable condition after he was gored by a bison near Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park.
Arvo Ensio Pulkkinen, of Sydney, Australia, was visiting the park with a bus tour group, officials said.
He was standing with a group of people on a sidewalk about halfway between the Old Faithful visitor center and the Old Faithful Inn on Sunday when a bison began running along the sidewalk.
The other visitors climbed a log fence to get out of the animal’s path, but Pulkkinen was struck by the bison in the upper inner thigh.
The bison may have cracked a bone in the man’s leg and nicked an artery, officials said.
Rangers provided immediate care, then an air ambulance transported Pulkkinen to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Park officials issued a reminder that bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and sprint up to 30 mph and that visitors should keep a safe distance from all park wildlife.
