The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear cases challenging California's Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act on March 26 and March 27. Prop. 8 bans gay marriage in California while the Defense of Marriage Act defines marriage as between a woman and a man and denies married gay and lesbian couples federal benefits given to married heterosexual couples. A few states have already been mulling over overturning same sex marriage bans or allowing constitutional amendments for civil unions. In the last month, both Colorado's House and Senate passed a bill to allow gay marriage. It is now awaiting signature by the state's governor. Gay marriage bills are also in limbo in states like Illinois and Minnesota.
