— -- A California family on a fishing trip got a big catch when they discovered a message in a bottle that may have been floating in the ocean for years.

David Wilson, his girlfriend and his 10-year-old daughter ventured out on Sunday near Pismo Beach It’s in San Luis Obispo County despite high surf advisories, ABC affiliate KEYT reported. When a giant wave hit Wilson, he lost his shoe but stumbled upon a glass bottle.

"He came back with a bottle and he was pointing at it," his girlfriend Casey Baca told the station. "He was holding a bottle up in the air and he was just showing it to us and I just thought it was really cool because it was all the way from Maui."

They found a message inside that appeared to be from a young girl named Safina, who said she lived in Hawaii. The year written on the note was 2010.

"It was tattered and had gotten kind of wet, so we unpeeled it very carefully and let the sun dry it out," Baca said.

The note also included an invitation.

"It says, this long lost bottle is inviting you to Safina's birthday party," Wilson said.

He thinks the girl might be around the same age as his daughter, Kaya.

"I would just want to talk to her, to see like, talk to her about the party and everything and it would really just be cool to see her," Kaya told KEYT.
