— -- Police are investigating the death of a Houston car dealer who was killed just weeks after calling 911 about an attempted armed robbery.

Joseph Stewart was shot and killed while inside his garage last Thursday. His neighbor called police after hearing gunshots, said Houston Police Department investigator Robert Lujan.

"They heard the gunshots and then they saw someone run across the street," he said.

Police said Stewart reported a robbery in late April. He claimed a Jeep with three armed men inside pulled up behind him and attempted to rob him - but that he was able to escape.

Stewart's dealership posted condolences following his murder.

Alice Davis, one of Stewart's former employees, remembered him as a friend.

"When my brother died, I didn't have all the money for the funeral," she told ABC station KTRK. "This man paid for it. He is my friend, so whoever did this, yes, I want them caught. Yes, they need to pay for it."

Lujan said that Stewart had no known enemies.

"It possibly could be a robbery that went bad, but at this point we don't want to speculate," he said.
