On June 24, 2021, the Champlain Towers South, a 12-story oceanfront condominium in Surfside, Fla., partially collapsed, killing 98 people. After 14 days, search and rescue efforts shifted to a recovery effort at the complex. The final victim was identified more than a month later. The remainder of the condominium was demolished 10 days following the collapse, due to concerns over structural integrity. Investigators still do not know the exact cause of the collapse; the settlement for victims was more than $1 billion.
