Teens Growing Up in the White House
Before father William Taft became President in 1908, he was Vice-President to Theodore Roosevelt. At age 11, Taft's son Charles Phelps Taft II., along with Roosevelt's children became part of "The White House Gang." The group roller-skated in the White House hallways, stilt-walked in the high ceilinged rooms, and explored every possible space of the White House from attic to basement. One of their favorite games was to stage "attacks" upon various government office buildings.
