Teacher of the Year charged with assaulting teen girl

An instructor recently named teacher of the year in a Rhode Island community has been charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student

NEWPORT, R.I. -- An instructor recently named teacher of the year in a Rhode Island community has been charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student.

Police say the 66-year-old Kalble engaged "in unwanted sexual contact with a 16-year-old girl by using force, the element of surprise and coercion."

Newport schools Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain says Kalble has been placed on administrative leave.

He was named Newport's teacher of the year last month. The Rhode Island Hospitality Association named Kalble the state Culinary Arts teacher of the year in 2016.

A message was left with his attorney.
