Jan. 25, 2010— -- Two days before his State of the Union address, President Obama is offering a preview today of some of its key elements. He will announce initiatives aimed at calming some of the economic fears of struggling middle class families. The proposals include doubling the child care tax credit, capping student loan payments and helping families caring for elderly relatives.

The State of the Union comes at a pivotal time for the president -- his job approval ratings are down and his administration was dealt a significant political blow with the election of Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts to the U.S. Senate.
