Dec. 17, 2010— -- Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is under house arrest in Britain, after being released on bail yesterday facing accusations of rape and molestation in Sweden.

Assange is wearing an electronic tracking tag, but he's not restricted from using the Internet, and he promises to speed up the release of information.

Assange told ABC's Jim Sciutto that he's driven in part by his belief that certain U.S. institutions, including the State Department, are "authoritarian conspiracies" that need to be weakened or brought down.

The U.S. government maintains that the information Assange and his Wikileaks colleagues have released puts lives at risk, and the Justice Department is pursuing a criminal investigation.

But another group has held up Assange as a hero, particularly among some hackers.
