May 31, 2010— -- While Memorial Day might signify the unofficial start of summer with backyard barbecues, it's far more than that. It's a day to honor the ultimate sacrifice made by military men and women in the line of duty.

Across the country, some are participating in parades and visiting cemeteries and war memorials. President Obama will pay his respects at the Abraham Lincoln Cemetery near Chicago, with Vice President Biden taking his place at Arlington National Cemetery's wreath-laying ceremony.

Congress asks all Americans to participate in a "National Moment of Remembrance" - a minute of silence at 3 p.m., local time, to mark the holiday.

Last week, the United States marked a milestone, as the 1,000th U.S. service member died in the Afghan war, a reminder that the nation is at war and many are still making the sacrifice that we recognize today.
