Finally tonight here, she was born into a famous family, but she was determined to define every chapter of her life herself. And she did. Celebrating Gloria Vanderbilt. Gloria Vanderbilt was born into the famous Vanderbilt family. The great-great granddaughter of railroad and shipping tycoon. She lost her father when she was just a baby. And at 10, she was the subject of a bitter child custody battle between her mother and her aunt. The newspapers covered every step of the battle. She was married four times, she had four children. She would act as a young woman and over the course of her life she would write and paint, too. ABC news at the opening of her art show in 1969 in New York City. How do you feel, personally, having your work here? Oh, I'm delighted. I love to work and I work hard and long and this is going to keep me going and I like that, so, I'm delighted with it. Reporter: But many will remember when she turned the family name into a forchur. Her eye, her jeans. This is Gloria Vanderbilt. The woman who invented designer jeans and almost overnight changed the way America dresses. Reporter: They were everywhere. Introducing canvas jeans that were built for your figure. Vanderbilt for your figure. Reporter: But Gloria Vanderbilt would navigate her chair of loss, too. In 1988, she lost a con, Carter, to suicide, and she wrote about he was just 23. But she would remain an optimist, once saying, be kind to everyone you meet, for everyone is fighting a great battle. We all are. Everyone. And it was her devoted son, Anderson cooper, who announced her passing today. You could hear it in his voice. The last few weeks, every time I kissed her good-bye, I'd say, I love you, mom.
