And we have an american victory to tell you about tonight. General motors vanquishing the competitors with two mighty wins at the north american international auto show. What was a successful idea? And the first woman ceo of a u.S. Car company got this done in record speed. How? Abc's chief business correspondent, rebecca jarvis, spoke to her. Reporter: A first for general motors. The winner is the stingray. Reporter: Winning top car and truck of the year. But it's the woman behind the winning designs, mary barra, who's grabbing all the headlines. A mob at her first public appearance since being named gm's ceo. "World news" getting exclusive access behind the scenes. Whether you like it or not, people are going to focus on the fact that you're a woman. And you're the first woman. Every job I've approached, I've never approached it from that way. I build a strong team. Reporter: The success of gm riding on her shoulders. The car of the future, she says, will take a lesson from the new corvette she oversaw. Lighter, more fuel-efficient. But also more resistant to minor bumps, like those from supermarket shopping carts. And there's a host of technologies I can't talk about but we're working on. Reporter: Come on. Give me one. I can't. It's a competitive imperative for us. Reporter: Barra, the first female in her family to go to college, started at gm in 1980. Her father worked for gm for 39 years. This is the cadillac cts, motortrend car of the year. Reporter: What would your parents think if they saw this now? They would be so proud. Reporter: What does it say to the american auto industry and american people, to see a woman on top? When I started here 33 years ago, had no idea this would be the role I would be playing. But I approached every position like I was going to do it for the rest of my life. And I think that's a strong message of hard work pays off. Reporter: Barra's prediction for the future, a lot more electric cars. And the self-driving cars you hear so much about. They will be on the roads in our lifetime. And she thinks they will be safe. Diane? Rebecca jarvis at the big auto show.
