Suspect Hijacks Bus, Striking and Killing Pedestrian in Washington, DC

The suspect is in custody, police said.

The driver and passengers fled, but the suspect then pulled out a weapon, shut the bus door and drove away, Lanier said.

At a gas station lot, the suspect drove over a curb and fatally hit a pedestrian, Lanier said. The pedestrian has been identified as 40-year-old Anthony Payne, according to the MPD.

Witness Horace Johnson told ABC News he heard the impact of the bus and saw someone lay on the ground. Johnson said someone then called the police and officers surrounded the bus.

Johnson said it looked like the suspect was trying to resist arrest; he saw about six officers put him on the ground and handcuff him.

The suspect is in custody. Lanier said the entire deadly hijacking lasted less than three minutes.

The bus operator suffered non-life-threatening injuries, said Metro Transit Police. No passengers were injured.
