The NFL on Sunday night confirmed what had been rumored for two months: Madonna will headline the halftime show of the 2012 Super Bowl. She will take the stage to perform at halftime of Super Bowl 46 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on February 5. She will work with Cirque du Soleil on a concept for the gig.

The announcement was made during Sunday night’s broadcast of the New Orleans Saints-Detroit Lions game on NBC.

This will be Madonna’s first time performing at the Super Bowl. She was scheduled to sing her cover of “American Pie” at the 2000 Super Bowl, but she cancelled the appearance due to a conflict in her recording schedule. She is currently recording an album.

The Black Eyed Peas performed at this year’s edition of the Super Bowl.
