News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch took a jab at Tom Cruise on Twitter, calling Scientology a "very weird cult" made up of "creepy" and possibly "evil" people.

Murdoch's tweets came two days after Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise.

"Scientology back in news. Very weird cult, but big, big money involved with Tom Cruise either number two or three in hierarchy," Murdoch posted Sunday on his official Twitter feed.

Later he tweeted, "Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people."

Murdoch's controversial tweets sparked outrage on Twitter, which prompted him to defend his stance.

"Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks. Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story."

Scientology officials have not responded to a request for comment.

Murdoch was asked about his views on Mormonism, which is a subplot in the presidential campaign as Mormon Mitt Romney faces President Obama.

"Mormonism a mystery to me, but Mormons certainly not evil," Murdoch said.

Cruise and Holmes married in 2005 and have a daughter, Suri. Cruise has already hired Dennis Wasser, the Los Angeles based powerhouse divorce attorney who represented Cruise in his divorce with actress Nicole Kidman.
