Though Prince William escorted his wife, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, to cheer on their home team at a rugby match over the weekend, what she got as well was a taste of his childhood as a young prince.

William and Kate, both 30, came to see Wales play New Zealand in rugby at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, but before taking their seats for the match, the royal couple greeted their home team at a reception for the Welsh Rugby Union, for which William is a Vice Royal Patron.

When William went to sign the guest book with Middleton, he also shared with her a memento from his childhood, pointing out to her where he'd signed the book as a 12-year-old at the stadium with his mother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

The UK's Daily Mail reports William signed his name neatly back then, in 1995, but on this occasion used a more "untidy scrawl" while his wife signed the guest book simply with an "elegant" "Catherine."

For the game and receptions with both Wales players and injured rugby players, both William and Kate came dressed to support their home team, known as the Red Dragons.

William wore a red striped tie while Kate dipped in to her closet to pull out a red L.K. Bennett coat she was spotted in last November while visiting a UNICEF site in Denmark, also with William.

While the royals had the spirit, the Welsh team lost the match 33-10.
