Who Is Jenna Marbles and Why Is She So Popular?

Jenna Marbles might just be the most famous person you've never heard of.

Her real name is Jenna Mourey, but she has become one of the biggest YouTube stars posting videos under the name Jenna Marbles (Marbles is her dog).

At 26, Mourey has built an online empire practically from her bedroom. Her videos have been viewed more than 1 billion times. She has more Facebook fans than Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, and her more than 1 million Instagram friends top even Oprah Winfrey.

She has managed to achieve notable success for making videos about mundane topics.

One of her top videos is a tutorial for how to apply makeup while drunk. She got drunk to do the demonstration, she told ABC News. Another features her junk food confessions. Many of her videos are filled with profanity.

Asked what it was like to see her video views rise so dramatically, Mourey, of Santa Monica, Calif., told ABC News: "It's bizarre, I mean … it's just crazy."

She posted her first YouTube video in 2010. She made it one night while she was getting ready to go to work as a go-go dancer. Titled "How to trick people into thinking you're good looking," the video has been seen more than 50 million times.

Mourey now makes videos once a week, on topics ranging from a day in her life to her thoughts on Shark Week, the week-long series of programs devoted to sharks that the Discovery Channel airs every year.

Mourey acknowledges that her work is "ridiculous.

"It's ridiculous what I do," she said. "It's ridiculous that a lot of people watch it and what I put out on the Internet is ridiculous, yeah."

That may be, but her fans, who are mostly in their teens, seem to love it. Their parents aren't as enamored. They disapprove of Mourey's cursing and her talk about drinking and sex.

Mourey isn't certain she deserves to be so famous.

"I would image that some people would find it entertaining," she said. "The amount of people who have found it entertaining is ridiculous."
