What drew First Lady Michelle Obama to say "I do" to the Commander in Chief?

"I married him because of his character," First Lady Michelle Obama tells talk show host and stand-up comedian Steve Harvey.

Tune in to ABCNews.com on Wednesday for livestreaming coverage of the first 2012 Presidential Debate from Denver, Colo. Coverage kicks off with ABC News' live preview show at noon, and full debate coverage begins at 8 p.m.

The Obamas celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary today, but will find it difficult to get a moment alone as the president prepares to face off with Republican candidate Mitt Romney in their first televised debate tonight.

During the Steve Harvey taping Michelle Obama told the audience that after leaving Harvard law school the future president was flooded with job offers-from Wall Street to clerking at the Supreme Court-but turned it all down to work on voter registration within the community.

"I was very impressed that he was that committed to using his talents to help others," Michelle Obama said.

She also discussed her initial hesitation when President Obama first expressed his interest in running for political office.

"Politics is one of those mean, ugly kinda things sometimes," she says. "I didn't want my husband to go through all of that. But then I thought, this is the kind of man, person, we want in office, and if I don't support him then I'm being really selfish."

The full episode will air October 3.
