Rep. Raul Ruiz, an emergency room doctor by trade, stepped in to help a passenger who collapsed on his flight home today.

The California Democrat, 41, "stabilized the passenger" but it's unclear what happened to the man after he left the plane in Raleigh, N.C., where the flight was temporarily diverted, Ruiz spokesman Michael Ford said.

Another congressman, Rep. Pete Gallego, D-Texas, was also on the flight and tweeted about his freshman colleague's stepping up to provide medical attention to a passenger who had collapsed.

The plane continued on to Dallas-Fort Worth, where Ruiz connected for his final leg to the Golden State.

Ruiz is not the only Member of the 113 th Congress who has stepped up to provide medical aid.

In September 2011, Phil Roe, R-Tenn., an obstetrician by trade who served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator, or AED, to save a man who had gone into cardiac arrest at the Charlotte, N.C., airport.

On Aug. 26, 2012, Rep. Andy Harris, a Republican from Maryland, was able to revive a toddler who appeared to have stopped breathing during a seizure.

In 1998, then-Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn., a former heart and lung transplant surgeon, performed lifesaving measures on a gunman who was wounded after killing two on-duty Capitol Police officers.
