Going Vintage Shopping With Maria del Pilar

Her new album, titled simply "Songs + Canciones I", was released in March 26th under Cosmica Artists and is a reflection of her maturity both as a woman and a performer. She spent four months in Chile recording with renowned producer Vicente Sanfuentes (recommended by her friend, Chilean songstress Francisca Valenzuela) and surrounding herself with talented musicians such as Valenzuela and alternative music star, Gepe, whom Maria del Pilar describes as a sweetheart.

A cool stare.

"Personally I went through a really tough break up, but then I saw myself with a blank slate where I could totally do whatever I wanted to do, so I went back to Chile. I was missing the culture. I felt like I needed to reconnect," says Maria del Pilar.

MDP is for Maria del Pilar.

This clean slate also brought about a new perspective on her name. Her friend Gabrial McNair who plays with No Doubt suggested she use her birth name for this new project. "Making this album, I had a moment of reinvention and decided to take his suggestion, and it's been great. It's a process of reinventing yourself and a rebirth in a way," she says. "You know, shed old skin and rising from the ashes from going through some really rough personal things. It's the maturity and becoming really comfortable with my womanhood and a diva in a way. Taking on the strength of my talent as a musician, as a writer, as an artist."

This is how things are paid for in Echo Park.

And taking on the responsibilities of being a Maria del Pilar: a strong, powerful female force to be reckoned with, even if they call you Pailar, Pilly or Filly.

Don't miss Maria del Pilar's CD release party this Saturday at The Satellite in Los Angeles. She will be opening the show for Gaby Moreno. Get tickets here.
