World Financial Center Evacuated in Bomb Scare

Suspicious package triggers precautionary evacuation in downtown Manhattan.

April 12, 2012— -- Part of New York's 2 World Financial Center was briefly evacuated today after an inert novelty hand grenade was discovered in the mailroom, law enforcement officials said.

The World War Two-era grenade was mounted on a plaque, with a number hanging from a pin and an inscription that reads "Complaint Dept. Take a Number," officials said. It was found in the mail room after routine screening.
