Powerball Winner Pedro Quezada Settles $29,000 Child Support Debt

April 1, 2013 — -- The New Jersey bodega owner who won a $338 million Powerball jackpot last week appeared in court today to settle unpaid child support.

Pedro Quezada, who is the father of five children who range in age from 5 to 23, appeared in state Superior Court in Paterson today to settle a $29,000 debt, according to the Passaic County Sheriff's Office.

After Quezada came forward as the sole winner of the fourth-largest Powerball jackpot in history, authorities revealed the newly minted multi-millionaire was wanted for outstanding child support payments dating back to 2009.

The Passaic County Sheriff's Office stayed the warrant on Saturday so Quezada could appear in court today and close the matter with his now-swelling checkbook.

Quezada Vowed to Help Family

A jubilant Quezada was introduced as the sole winner of the jackpot last week, which he said he elected to take in a lump sum, worth $221 million, or about $152 million after taxes.

"My family is a very humble family, and we are going to help each other out," he said.

Quezada emigratred from the Dominican Republican 26 years ago to find work in the United States, he said at a news conference last week.

Until last year, Quezada would awake at 5 a.m. to open his bodega, Apple Deli Grocery, stay until closing time at 11 p.m., he said. His son had taken over operations of the store, but with his windfall, Quezada said he planned to relieve his son of the job.

He also pledged to help those in need in his working-class Passaic, N.J., neighborhood.

A friend told the New York Daily News that Quezada had offered to pay rent for residents living near his bodega for "at least a month or two months."

"My life has changed," Quezada said last week. "It will not change my heart."
