May 6, 2014 — -- "Mad Men" fans were given a real treat last month as 20-year-old video surfaced of Jon Hamm as a contestant on dating show "The Big Date" from 1996. Hamm, one of three male contestants, wasn't chosen by the woman and his answers were a far cry from smooth-talking Don Draper.

Hamm, 43, got a bit serious when telling Vanity Fair about how he ended up on that show.

“I was actually at that time working as a set dresser for Cinemax soft-core porn movies,” he says. “It was soul-crushing.”

Hamm, who has been with his girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt, for 16 years, added that video definitely predates their relationship.

Hamm also added that while he is bicoastal in Los Angeles and New York, he and Westfeldt have a rule when it comes to time apart. They can't spend more than two weeks without seeing one another.

“One or the other of us has to make the flight,” Hamm said. “It helps. Physical presence is a big part of it. Home is where the dog is.”

Although things have worked out for the actor now, Hamm revealed that when he was young, his father would take him to parties and racy movies.

The first movie the St. Louis native ever went to with his father was "Animal House," and he said, "I think I was seven. This was before my mom was dead. So it was a curious decision.”

The June issue of Vanity Fair will be on national newsstands May 13.
