— -- Sam Smith recently lost more than 10 pounds on a new diet. However, he recognizes that keeping the weight off will be a lifelong commitment.

"I just love food," he told U.K.'s Magic Radio. "I still love it, it's gonna be a battle for the rest of my life. It's not, like, this horrible diet that kills me -- when I want to eat something bad, I do it. But I've just got to stay on top of it, which is tough. I love fried chicken and cheese!"

It's been a year of ups and downs for Smith, 23, who, in addition to getting into shape, had to undergo surgery for a vocal cord hemorrhage this past spring. As a result, he canceled a slew of tour dates and then had to rest his voice for weeks -- an experience he now can call "the best thing that happened to me, ever."

"I feel like I've been gifted with time. I got to stop for a month and rest and become normal again, and realize how insanely my life has changed," he explained. "In some areas, it's changed for the worse."

"It's really hard sometimes, some things are taken away from you, so it was beautiful for me to be able to kind of regain my normality a little bit," he added of fame. "Because it got to the point where my mum and dad were being put on guest lists to see me after shows. They didn't get to spend any time with their son, and that's not normal."

Smith is already at work on his next album, the follow-up to the Grammy-winning smash "In the Lonely Hour."

"I mean, I'm already writing [new songs]," he told Magic. "I feel like I've already got the title to the album, I've got the concept to the album. I work in terms of concepts, when I find the thing I want to write about, I actually go out and physically do it."
