Feb. 24, 2013— -- intro: With "Family Guy" and "Ted" under his belt, we knew Seth MacFarlane was going to be over-the-top in his Oscar hosting gig.

No one was off limits when it came to MacFarlane's jokes. He took jabs at Daniel Day-Lewis, Rihanna and Chris Brown, and George Clooney, among others.

But MacFarlane's hosting job got mixed reviews from viewers at home.

"When Daniel Day-Lewis tells better jokes in 3 minutes than Seth MacFarlane does in 3 hours, you know it's been a great #oscars," one viewer tweeted after Day-Lewis took home the Oscar for Best Actor.

"Seth MacFarlane is effn' awesome as the Oscars host, bring him back for 2014! #Oscars #host #hilarious," another tweeted.

Another viewer tweeted, "Disappointed that @SethMacFarlane didn't do any of the family guy voices!! Like stewie!"

Stars were also split on MacFarlane's hosting gig.

"Are they still gonna do the awards part or is that gonna be announced later online. #letsmoveitalong #oscars," David Spade tweeted after MacFarlane's long opening monologue.

"Enjoying the Oscars with @SethMacFarlane hosting. Best year yet," Peter Facinelli tweeted.

"I love @SethMacFarlane he is FANTASTIC :) love you.... #call me ;)#Oscars," Julianne Hough tweeted.

Will MacFarlane go down in history as the worst Oscars host ever? Or did he have enough high moments to put him at the top of the best hosts list? Click through to see some of MacFarlane's best and worst Oscar moments:

quicklist: 1title: Opening Monologuetext: MacFarlane's opening monologue was surprisingly tame as far as MacFarlane jokes go. He referenced Ben Affleck's lack of a nomination for Best Director for "Argo," saying "the film's director is unknown to the academy. They know they screwed up. Ben it's not your fault."

The 39-year-old host's most controversial joke came when he described "Django Unchained" as the "story of a man fighting to get back his woman subjected to unthinkable violence" before adding, "or date night for Rihanna and Chris Brown," which brought a gasp from the audience.

MacFarlane was booed when he said "Django's" N-word filled screenplay was "loosely based on Mel Gibson's voicemails."

"Oh really? so you're on his side?" he asked.

William Shatner as Captain Kirk from "Star Trek" then descended to the stage to warn MacFarlane that he was about to ruin the Oscars and be branded the worst Oscar host ever.

"You sing an incredibly offensive song that upsets a lot of women in the audience," Shatner said.

Cut to MacFarlane singing "We Saw Your Boobs," a hilarious number that recounted when we've seen actresses nude in movies.

MacFarlane then redeemed himself by showing his singing chops with Frank Sinatra's "The Way You Look Tonight," "High Hopes" and an insult-filled rendition of "Be Our Guest."

His opening monologue also included an epic kiss with Best Supporting Actress nominee Sally Field with MacFarlane dressed as a flying nun, and a sock puppet reenactment of "Flight."media: 18584852

quicklist: 2title: Jack Daniels for George Clooneytext: MacFarlane was the biggest fan of 9-year-old Best Actress nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, who was off limits when it came to his racy jokes.

When addressing the rest of the room, MacFarlane said, "So you got nominated for an Oscar. Something a 9-year-old can do," which brought a celebration dance from the "Beasts of the Southern Wild" star.

"It'll be 16 years before she's too old for Clooney," MacFarlane quipped, which didn't get many laughs from the audience. He added that Clooney was the only sober guy in the room before throwing the "Argo" producer a mini bottle of Jack Daniels.

Clooney was then caught cracking the bottle open before the camera cut away from him.media: 18586691

quicklist: 3title: Ted Makes an Appearancetext: MacFarlane is known most recently for his box office hit "Ted," so it was no surprise that a hologram of the teddy bear, who he voiced, made an appearance.

Before announcing the winners for Best Sound Mixing and Sound Editing, Ted begged co-star and co-presenter Mark Wahlberg where the "big post-Oscars Hollywood orgy" was. Apparently it's at Jack Nicholson's house, or so Wahlberg joked.

And Ted wouldn't be Ted without a Jewish joke. The bear asked Wahlberg if he's Jewish because he has "a berg" at the end of his name. When Wahlberg said no, Ted replied, "Wrong answer. Try again. If you want to work in this town."media: 18586082

quicklist: 4title: The Von Trapp Familytext: One of MacFarlane's stranger hosting moments was when he announced the Von Trapp family would be singing a song from "The Sound of Music." He motioned toward the door twice, but they never appeared. Then a Nazi came running in to announce they were gone -- re-enacting a scene from the 1960s musical.media: 18585599

quicklist: 5title: Most Over-the-Top Jokestext: Some MacFarlane jokes got a lot of laughs from the audience, but others, well, not so much.

One quip that was especially disliked by the audience was when MacFarlane said John Wilkes Booth was the one who "really got in Lincoln's head."

"One hundred fifty years and it's still too soon?" he asked when the audience was silent.

Later in the night, the Oscar host announced they were bringing out the stars of "Chicago" "because we are concerned tonight's show isn't gay enough yet."

MarFarlane did get some laughs at the expense of Ben Affleck and Jessica Chastain.

On Affleck's facial hair: "The first time I saw him with all that facial hair I thought, finally the Kardashians have made the jump to film."

On Jessica Chastain's character in "Zero Dark Thirty" -- a movie about a "woman's innate ability to never let anything go," he jokes.media: 18584779
