'Star Wars: The Force Awakens': Did Kylo Ren Plan to Kill Han Solo?
Director J.J. Abrams tells all.
— -- Last year we said goodbye to an old friend in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
Toward the end of the film, Harrison Ford's Han Solo tries to talk his son, bad guy Kylo Ren, out of helping the First Order and go home with him. But Adam Driver's Kylo Ren was having none of that and killed his father with a lightsaber in that epic scene on the bridge.
Now director J.J. Abrams is explaining in exclusive footage, obtained by USA Today, whether killing Solo was Kylo's plan all along or it was a spur-of-the-moment decision.
"People have asked me if I think Kylo Ren was just playing with him the whole time," Abrams said. "The truth is in this moment, I believe Kylo Ren in this moment is actually being convinced to walk away from this."
This means that Ren really did think about turning back to the light. But the pull of the dark side was too strong.
Abrams added that he believes Ren, aka Ben Solo, knows Supreme Leader Snoke is "using him."
"But I think he can't accept it, deep down. He's gone too far," he said.
The clip ends in a joke.
"Anytime two characters in 'Star Wars' go out on an incredibly thin bridge 10 miles above the ground with no railings, it's not going to end well with one of them," Abrams quipped.
"Do or do not. There is no try," as wise Yoda once said.
