Photographer's 'Baby Love' Sure to Make You Smile
Rachael Hale shares book of baby photos, tips for tear-free pictures.
Oct. 23, 2008 — -- After years of capturing images of playful pets, best-selling animal photographer Rachael Hale has turned her lens to a new subject--babies.
"They are the most joyous little souls, they just have so much character and personality, and they are not hiding behind any false identities … they are just so wonderful to photograph," she said.
Parents working tirelessly to capture the perfect photo for this year's holiday card, or just any picture of their baby actually looking at the camera, may not consider babies the easiest photo subjects. They get distracted, they move around, and then there's the crying--oh, the crying.
But just when you want to give up, there are the smiles. In her new book, "Baby Love: An Affectionate Miscellany," Hale shares the joy and innocence of infancy. Inside are photos of babies smiling, laughing, sleeping, wide-eyed and inquisitive. In the course of a year and a half, Hale has photographed over one hundred babies.
Along with the striking images are interesting facts about babies from around the world. From babies' favorite nursery rhymes and fairy tales to the most popular baby names, the book is an adorable addition to any baby-lover's collection.
And for parents struggling to capture a no-fuss photo of their baby, Hale has a few tips:
1. Turn off the flash on your camera and use natural light to avoid red-eye. Natural light is also more flattering.
2. Try shooting younger babies from directly above so that they are looking at the camera.
3. Postpone your photo session until after your babies have taken a nap, that way they'll be well-rested and happy.
4. Have fun with it! Hale blasts the song "Baby Love" by Diana Ross and the Supremes during her photo sessions.
Once you've captured the perfect image of your tot, be sure to pass it on. According to Hale, the infectious joy of babies is sure to brighten up anyone's day. "Everyone is just so relaxed around babies, and it really brings a smile to everyone's faces, they are just really wonderful little souls."
