March 23, 2006 — -- If you haven't heard of Teddy Geiger, you're probably over the age of 20.

More than 24,000 teenage girls recently entered Seventeen magazine's "Win a Date With Teddy Geiger" contest for a chance to spend a day with the burgeoning rock star. The winner caught the flu on the day of the date -- ouch! Thanks to his blue eyes and easy smile, Geiger has become every girl's fantasy prom date.

But this would-be high school senior's sound has a much broader appeal. Music insiders are billing him as the next John Mayer, so if you've already escaped the bonds of puberty, prepare yourself to jump on the Teddy Geiger bandwagon.

This teen heartthrob's music backs up the hype. His lyrics are surprisingly mature -- making you wonder how great they will be once he actually experiences life -- and he writes his own music.

It's clear he is an original, but for now he's happy to be compared to a star who has come before him.

"Any new artist that comes out is going to have someone they're compared to, and I'm happy I'm compared to him [John Mayer]," Geiger told "Good Morning America" radio after his appearance on the show. "He's had a great career, and I feel like he's a very good songwriter."

At the ripe old age of 17, he's an experienced songwriter, having started when he was 8, the same time he picked up the guitar. That was his second instrument. He started the piano when he was 6. And, by the way, he's taught himself the whole way.

"My parents tried to give me lessons, and I ended up not being a huge fan of lessons," Geiger said. "I like figuring it out on my own."

Geiger inherited his analytical skills from his parents -- his dad was a chemistry major and his mom is a chemistry teacher -- but his musical talents come from a previous generation.

"My grandparents are all musical. My great-grandfather was a published composer," Geiger said. "Me and my dad share our same need to create things. But he does it through design and building a deck in the backyard, and I do it through music."
