How Will Having An Anxiety Disorder Affect My Plans For School And Work?

Question: How will having an anxiety disorder affect my plans for school and work?

Jennifer Hartstein, PsyD., St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital

Answer: It depends on how severe your anxiety disorder is as to how it will impact your school and work life. If it's a really significant anxiety disorder that causes a lot of avoidance, you could potentially miss a lot of work, kids could refuse to go to school -- and then that could put you in job jeopardy, or put kids in risk of being retained in their current grade. So, if it's starting to really interfere with functioning, looking forward to trying to find some treatment or some intervention for yourself might really be indicated.
